Matt Alder [00:00:17]:
Hi everyone, this is Matt Alder. Welcome to the February Roundup episode of the Recruiting Future podcast. If you’ve not listened to Roundup before, it’s a short review of the episodes that I’ve published in the last month to make sure you don’t miss out on the valuable insights that my guests share. So how you doing? How is 2021 going for you so far? In many ways it’s even more challenging than 2020, but there does seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel, and I’m personally looking forward to brighter times as we head into spring and eventually summer here in Scotland, the world of talent acquisition continues to disrupt and develop at pace, and I’ve had the privilege of hosting some excellent practitioners on the podcast who are helping to lead the way. I didn’t publish a roundup in January as I was somewhat overwhelmed with homeschooling our 5 year old, so I’m going to highlight some episodes from January here as well.
A key question for all of us is what does great talent acquisition now look like in episode 328? I spoke to Rhona Anholt and Ed Nathanson, the Chief People Officer and VP of Talent and Talent Branding at disruptive pharmaceutical startup EQRx. Since their launch early last year, EQRx have done fantastic work in talent branding and talent acquisition and really are a benchmark for what hiring strategies should now look like. We talked about the challenges of scaling up during a pandemic purpose driven culture, being bold with talent branding and the ever increasing importance of candidate experience.
It’s still early in the year, but reimagining recruitment marketing is already a big topic for 2021. This has been clear in several conversations I’ve had with talent acquisition leaders and in the results of the audience survey which I ran back in January. Many employers are looking to transform their recruitment marketing to meet the new challenges they have and leverage emerging techniques and technolog. So what is cutting edge thinking in recruitment marketing and what steps do talent acquisition teams need to take to unlock the power of what’s possible? One of the most progressive thinkers in the industry when it comes to recruitment marketing is Elyn Bailey, global recruitment marketing Leader at Intel. I was delighted to welcome her back to the podcast in episode 331 for what turned out to be an extraordinary interview about the future of recruitment marketing. If you’re currently reviewing your approach to recruitment marketing, then listening to this is a great place to start.
The events of 2020 and 2021 will shape how talent acquisition operates for years, especially when it comes to recruiting automation. In the past, automation in recruiting has often been dismissed as impersonal and ineffective. However, as technology has developed and strategies have changed, the immense value and inevitability of AUT is now becoming clear. Frontline food retail has faced some unprecedented challenges during the pandemic which are driving them to innovate in interesting ways.
In episode 333 I spoke to Jeff Yuden, head of talent for UK supermarket Iceland. Jeff gave us some insights into Iceland’s successful use of automation to radically enhance both the candidate and and hiring manager experience. In addition to all the great practitioners I’ve had on the show recently, I also wanted to highlight three technology providers that I’ve spoken to who are helping to support the changes in talent acquisition and helping employers solve their evolving challenges. Long term listeners to the podcast will already know about my deep held belief that career sites are the critical element of recruitment marketing that remains very much underutilised.
Many forward thinking employers are now turning to careersite systems to maximize the recruitment marketing benefits of careersites and minimize their development pain points. To get all the details on this in episode 332 I spoke to James Saunders, CEO of Attrax and one of the pioneers of careersite systems. Understanding and assessing talent is something I don’t think we talk about in enough detail in our industry.
Advances in both technology and neuroscience are challenging traditional thinking in recruiting and this is going to be another key topic for me this year. To get the conversation started, my guests on episode 329 had a simply fascinating story to share. Erik Castine and Andries von der Ley are the founder and cto of Brains First. BrainsFirst is a Dutch company uses cognitive psychology and machine learning to help elite football teams identify future talent. They brought their learnings into the business world with some amazing and unexpected results.
Finally, the number of talent acquisition technology solutions offering AI continues to grow exponentially. However, we must look at AI’s role in recruiting through a critical lens to ensure transparency and that technologies are fair and ethical. If AI is being used to improve the candidate experience and remove bias, how do we make sure it isn’t actually making things worse? My guest on episode 334 was Barb Hyman, CEO of Predictive Hire, an AI based interviewing solution. Predictive Hire has recently published a paper on fair AI in recruiting intended to provoke debate and help talent acquisition leaders ask the right questions when they’re buying a solution. Barb has an HR leadership background, which gives her a unique perspective on the dangers and opportunities of the AI revolution.
