Matt Alder [00:01:01]:
Hi everyone, this is Matt Alder. Welcome to the June Roundup episode of the Recruiting Future podcast. If you’ve not listened to Roundup before, it’s a short review of the episodes I’ve published in the last month to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the valuable insights that my guests share. We’re still very much in the midst of the pandemic and I know that many of you listening will be resetting your talent acquisition strategies for a changed future. Whatever the future looks like for your business, I want this podcast to be a valuable resource for you and I’m committed to bringing stories, advice and inspiration from both inside and outside of the industry. The interviews I published in June were very strongly focused on planning for the future and came from a number of different perspectives.
To start off the month in episode 271 I spoke to Andrew Missingham, the co founder of BNA, which describes itself as the fastest, most creative management consultancy in the world. Andrew works with companies on building productive cultures and he shared some insights into what business culture might look like in the post Covid world.
In episode 272 I spoke to another thought leader from outside the industry. Mike Berland is founder of data analytics firm Decodem and his work with well known politicians and organizations has helped him become an expert on brand and personal momentum. I found the concept of momentum, as Mike describes it, so intriguing. I immediately read his book, which is excellent. Momentum is definitely something I think all talent acquisition teams are going to need in the weeks and months ahead, particularly when it comes to continuous transformation and reinvention.
Reimagining talent acquisition was a core theme for June and I’m sure it will be for most of the rest of the year. Annie Rhyme, VP of Recruiting at Zillow, was my guest in episode 273 and she spoke about the pivoting and prioritizing Zillow’s currently undertaking to reinvent talent acquisition. She also shared some of the great work Zillow is doing in innovating its approach to internal mobility, something I’m sure many organizations could learn from.
I was introduced to my guest for episode 274 by Fraser Allen, who I spoke with on the podcast last month about content marketing, and I’m really glad he made the introduction. Sue Stockdale has an amazing life story which has made her an expert in developing mental resilience in extreme conditions. Mental resilience is something we could all do with more of right now, and it was great to hear her advice on motivation, inspiration and planning for an unexpected Future.
In episode 275 I spoke to Carl Porter and Charlie Hooper from the talent Acquisition team at Metro Bank. The COVID 19 pandemic has been driving an acceleration in digital transformation for many organizations, and Metro bank is no exception to this. I spoke to Carl and Charlie about how Metro bank is adapting its talent acquisition strategy, the technology they’re using, and why candidate experience remains critically important for them.
The last few years has been a boom time for recruiting technology with record levels of investment and interest as the digital transformation automation of talent acquisition progresses. So how has the pandemic affected things in the short term and what is the changed future of the recruiting technology market going to look like? I could think of no one better to ask than Jonathan Kestenbaum, the co founder of Talent Tech Labs. And in episode 276 we talked about the challenges and opportunities COVID 19 has created for recruiting technology and what the tech stack of the future is going to look like.
A few weeks ago I hosted a webinar organized by Attrax exploring both the short and long term future of talent acquisition. My guests were Ellie Hart, recruitment partner at Atkins, and Ben Gledhill, interim Head of Resourcing Transformation at Thames Water. We discussed how talent acquisition in their two organizations had been affected by the pandemic, how they are replanning the future, and the likely long term impacts. We had some great feedback about the webinar, so delighted to be able to publish the live audio recording as episode 277. In the last few months, college recruiting and internship programs have been refocused, scaled back and in many cases cancelled. Internships have become digital internships and on campus hiring has gone virtual.
Matt Alder [00:06:12]:
I’m really interested in understanding what companies are doing with intern and college hiring programs right now and what the long term implications are for early careers. In episode 278 I was lucky enough to speak to Dawn Carter, Director of Global University Recruiting at Uber, who talked through their current approach to early careers recruiting and how they’re planning for the future. This is a must listen for anyone working in that part of talent acquisition.
Finally, in episode 279, thoughts turned to the future of the workplace itself. What are our offices going to be like when we finally get to return to them? I spoke to Ash Hansen, SVP of Human Resources at Aramark. Aramark provides facilities, food and uniforms to employers across 19 countries and is at the cutting edge of the changes we’re currently seeing in workplaces all around the world. Lots of really interesting insight here about the relationship between employer, brand and physical workspace.
Finally, a big thank you to all the companies who sponsored the show in June, who for some reason all begin with the letter A. So thank you to Atrax, Avature and Aramark. The podcast would not exist without the support of all our sponsors, so please make sure you check out their website and see what they have to offer. If you’ve not subscribed to the podcast already, you can find it wherever you listen to your podcasts. And don’t forget you can now find and search all the past episodes@www.recruitingfuture.com.
Thanks very much for listening. I’ll be back next time and I hope you’ll join me.
