Matt Alder [00:00:48]:
Hi everyone, this is Matt Alder. Welcome to the August Roundup episode of the Recruiting podcast. If you’ve not listened to Roundup before, it’s a short review of the episodes that I’ve published in the last month to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the valuable insights that my guests share. So there wasn’t a July roundup as I was taking a couple of weeks off to recharge after the intensity of the last few months. I really hope you’ve all managed to take some kind of break over the summer. Mine consisted of turning off my laptop and enjoying some time exploring our local area with my family and it was great. Despite my reduced bandwidth, there was still at least one podcast episode a week during August and with great content courtesy of some fantastic guests.

First up in episode 288, it was great to reconnect with Marvin Smith from Lockheed Martin. Marvin was one of the very first people I saw talk about talent communities and talent engagement and he’s a genuine expert practitioner in this aspect of talent talent Acquisition Marvin gave us an overview of what effective talent communities look like in 2020 and shared some insightful thoughts on talent engagement. The pandemic hasn’t changed the fact that there are still areas of severe skill shortage in many markets, and this interview will really help those of you trying to reach and effectively engage with scarce and hard to find talent in challenging times. It’s essential that talent acquisition leaders fully understand the interrelation of employer brand culture, values and how an organization services its customers.

My guest on episode 289 was Diana George, an expert in helping employers understand the relationship between talent values, company culture and customer service. This was a really interesting conversation for me, particularly because I don’t feel that as an industry we join the dots enough between employer brand and customer service. When you do join them, it illustrates a bottom line business value which would most likely mean bigger budgets and more resources for employer and talent brand strategy work. Sticking with Employer Brand One of the topics we were talking about back in March was what effect the pandemic would have on the way Employers have to think about their employer brand strategies it’s now nearly September.

An employer brand is something many employers are having to consider carefully against a backdrop of mass layoffs and industries that may be changed forever by what’s happening in episode 290 I spoke to Kristen Wyrick, who until very recently was global Head of Talent Acquisition and Chief Diversity Officer at United Airlines. The global airline industry has taken a hammering in the last few months and Kristin shared her valuable insights into what employers should be doing during these challenging times. There are a number of key themes to our conversation, including how employers can ensure their employer brand is in the best possible place, the inflection point in diversity and inclusion, and the long term effects of 2020 on talent acquisition teams. We’ve been talking about the rise of the gig economy for several years now, but perhaps not properly considering its full implications. The labor market is now reshaping itself rapidly and there are clear signs that many employers are looking at developing an extended workforce that’s task focused ra than focusing on headcount. The impacts for talent acquisition, talent management and employer branding are significant and the role of technology is crucial. This is a really important topic that we need to take a deep dive into.

As a starting point in episode 291 I spoke to Jens Aldenaert, Division Vice President and General Manager for Work Market at adp. ADP has been doing a considerable amount of research into the nuances of the extended workforce and Jens has some valuable insights to share about the way employers can be leveraging workforce flexibility as well as talking about logistics and technology. We also considered the effect on employer branding strategies and Jens spoke about the need for total talent branding. I picked this topic up with Tim Prom from Kelly OCG in episode 292. It was great to have Tim back on the show and as well as talking about the changing labor market, he gave us an update on the adoption of recruiting automation and shared some advice on the technology strategy decisions employers should be making during the rest of 2020.

Last month we recorded a live version of the show as part of the Recruiting Automation Conferen organized by recruiting tech vendor Wade and Wendy. The theme of this virtual conference was diversity and inclusion and I was delighted to get to do another interview with recent podcast guest Anna Shallon, Director of Recruiting and Diversity and Inclusion at Frame IO. Anna has developed a four step process to help employers improve the diversity and inclusivity of their organizations and shared some fantastic advice based on this Framework Frame IO have seen some very positive results and this is a must listen interview for everyone.
